teachmespanishlogoTeach Me Spanish!

Teach Me Spanish! offers preschool through Kindergarten aged children the opportunity to build Spanish vocabulary and expressive abilities.  During class, your child will enjoy many fun and challenging activities, including:

1. Learning every-day, practical Spanish words.  We will cover basic vocabulary for colors, numbers, greetings, family members, body parts, pets, clothes and food as well as theme specific vocabulary throughout the year.  We will also learn basic conversational phrases through songs and rhymes.

2. Your child will hear Spanish spoken fluently and will practice Spanish by speaking with other children and the teacher.

3. We learn through music, rhythm and movement, engaging games, and through the use of picture cards & stories reinforcing vocabulary.

Every week, your child will receive a take-home activity sheet or word cards which will help reinforce what was taught in class.  Your child will also periodically construct books or special projects to further practice his or her language skills at home.  The age-appropriate instruction of each session will build your child’s curiosity in enhancing his or her Spanish skills-a strength that can be applied to all future learning.

After each class, you will receive a family note outlining what we did in class, ideas to reinforce vocabulary use at home and, of course, the phonetic spelling of each new word so you can learn along with your child if you wish!

“Teach Me Spanish!” Company Owner and Instructor Maria Bloomberg created the “Teach Me Spanish!” program in the winter of 2002 when she saw a specific need for programs focused on teaching Spanish to Preschool and School-Aged students.  She holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish and International Business from St. Cloud State University.  She has lived abroad in Costa Rica, Central America where she studied and worked with young children.  She has also had the wonderful opportunity to travel to many Latin American countries and Spain over the years and was able to spend the summer of 2010 in Costa Rica with her family.  She offers classes at many different child care centers in the Twin Cities area and offers special summer camps for school-age students.

Age range
– 4 to 5 years

Small student/teacher ratio – 10:1

Our Teachers

Experienced: Our Pre-Kindergarten teachers have been employed with Children’s Discovery Academy for over ten years! Darci has been with us since 2003 and Casi has been with us since 2008. Our experienced teachers truly enjoy working with Pre-Kindergartners and offer a safe, educational and supportive classroom for your child.

Loving: Our teachers are patient, encouraging, give lots of positive praise and will treat your child as an individual.

Consistent: We know that providing a limited number of consistent caregivers who your Pre-Kindergartner will relate to on a regular basis helps to promote trust and emotional security. This is why you’ll see the same smiling faces each and every day at Children’s Discovery Academy.

Our Curriculum

At Children’s Discovery Academy we celebrate the fact that we do not teach from a boxed curriculum but instead employ caring, qualified educators to write curriculum which meets all of the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress.  This way, we can ensure we are meeting the individual needs of your child. The Pre-Kindergarten daily schedule is structured, academically focused and fun!  Weekly lessons and activities focus on a curriculum rich in reading, math, science, art, music, sensory, dramatic play and imaginative play.

Language Development: The vocabulary of the children in the Pre-Kindergarten program continues to grow with new experiences. Your child will continue to perfect using words more correctly in context. The articulation of many beginning sounds is still developing.

Reading: Reading stories and activities including flannel boards, finger plays, rhyming, songs, and tape stories all continue to foster beginning reading skills.  Your Pre-Kindergartner will also begin to read picture books independently.  You will see lots of activities which require sequencing, comparing things that are alike and different, opposites, and listening for patterns which also enhance these skills.  Your child will review letter recognition, begin sound recognition and learn concept words to nourish reading skills.  Your Pre-Kindergarten student will be expected to sit for a longer period during group times.  During group times, the teachers will teach your child about the monthly calendar, days of the week, the weather, and upcoming activities for the day.

Math: Identifying colors, reviewing shapes, counting from 1-30 (and beyond), number recognition, counting with one to one correspondence, identifying numbers, sorting, sequencing, puzzles, same and different, patterns, size comparisons, blocks, understanding the concept of time, concept words, and introduction to computers are a small sampling of the activities designed to teach math concepts.

Social Development: Your Pre-Kindergartner’s friendships are becoming more important. He/she is encouraged by teachers to take turns, share, show respect, use good manners and resolve conflicts with his/her words.

Emotional Development: We will continue to work on your child’s positive self-esteem through songs, listening to stories about his/her family, giving him or her a turn to become the star of the week, and giving lots of positive encouragement. Your child is becoming much more independent and is starting to show initiative in caring for belongings. Your son/daughter may start to become more concerned about how others feel about them. As a Pre-Kindergartner, children are becoming less impulsive, and can generally use their words when upset. Continued discussions of feelings and how to express these feelings to others is still part of the daily routine.

Small Muscle Development: A small sample of the activities that help develop small motor control are: building blocks, sorting beads, stringing beads, coloring, cutting, painting, using different media for art, play dough, pegboards, sensory table, pouring and sifting through sand and water play using spoons, cups and measuring cups.

Large Muscle Development: Running, jumping, climbing, hopping, ball play, dancing, tumbling, riding bikes, kicking balls, etc. are all activities that promote the development of large muscles. Your Pre-Kindergartner has gained more control of their large muscles, and is now working on gaining strength and coordination. Your Pre-Kindergartner will enjoy recess twice per day, either outside on our large playground or inside in our gym.

Enrichment Programs: Fee-based lessons including dance, music, gymnastics, soccer and swimming are available to you Pre-Kindergartner.

Star of the Week: Your Pre-Kindergartner will have a turn to become the classroom’s star of the week, encouraging positive self-esteem. He/she will be encouraged to bring in items from home to share and introduce to the classroom. This is a great way to give your son/daughter lots of positive praise.

Monthly Field Trips: Field trips will relate to classroom lessons, bringing a firsthand experience to your child. Bus services are arranged through a qualified company. Parents are responsible for signing a field trip permission slip which explains destination, reason for field trip, cost and time for each field trip taken.

Weekly lessons and activities focus on a curriculum rich in reading, math, science, art, music, sensory, dramatic play and imaginative play.

Language Development: The vocabulary of your preschooler continues to grow with new experiences. Your son or daughter will continue to perfect speaking in full sentences and using words more correctly in context. The articulation of many beginning sounds is still developing.

Reading: Reading stories and activities including flannel boards, finger plays, and rhyming all help to foster reading skills. Your preschooler will be introduced to tape stories, sequencing, comparing things that are same and different, opposites, listening for patterns, understanding concept words such as over and under, and music. He or she will begin doing more teacher directed art projects and following three-step directions.

Math: Matching colors, recognizing colors, and identifying colors are all part of your preschooler’s abilities. Your child will become competent at matching and recognizing shapes. He or she will begin counting from 1-30 (and beyond) and comparing things that are the same and different. Other things that help foster math skills include working with puzzles, creating patterns on peg boards, sorting and sequencing objects, building with blocks, and comparing sizes and shapes. Your preschooler will also begin to analyze things such as the mass of an object and whether things will sink or float.

Social Development: Socially, your preschooler is learning to treat others as friends, control impulsive behaviors, take turns, learn the concept of respect, use good manners, be independent in toileting skills, share with others, and use their own words to solve conflicts.

Emotional Development: Teachers will continue to work on your child’s positive self-esteem through songs, listening to stories about your family, giving him or her the opportunity have a turn to become the star of the week, and giving lots of positive praise. Your child will be encouraged to be independent with toileting skills, dressing him or herself (including shoes and coats), hanging up coats and putting clothes away in cubbies. Your preschooler will begin to make more choices on their own. Your child may still be developing conflict resolution skills. Teachers will continue to coach your child on what they might say to get the solution they are seeking.

Age Range:
Toddlers that are 16 months of age to 36 months.
Small Student/Teacher Ratio: 7:1

Our Teachers

Experienced: Colleen has been with us since 2007, Lauri has been with us since 1990, Kacy has been with us since 2011 and Kristi has been with us since 2014. Our experienced teachers truly enjoy working with toddlers.

Loving: Our teachers sing songs, and do finger plays with the children and model motions and gestures toddlers can do with them while singing along or saying the words. The teachers facilitate imitation and pretend play with the toddlers by providing toys such as dolls, dishes, cars, trucks or blocks that can be used for pretend play. Teachers will talk about what your toddler is feeling whether your child is happy, excited, sad or upset. Teachers will comfort your toddler by talking with him/her about where you are going and when you will return. Parents are asked to bring in family photos to post in the classroom which are available for the children to see throughout the day.

Consistent: We know providing a limited number of consistent, qualified caregivers is a large part of building trust and security at our Center. We have regular staff with very little turn over that children and families can count on. Providing toddlers with an environment that encourages positive interaction in familiar surroundings as well as lots of positive encouragement & hugs also promotes trust and security at our Center. We make every effort to quickly answer each child’s cues, acknowledge anxiety, and offer loving support and reassurance to children in our care.

The toddler daily schedule is structured, academically focused and fun!  Weekly lessons and activities focus on a curriculum rich in reading, math, science, art, music, sensory, dramatic play and imaginative play.

Language Development: A child’s vocabulary doubles at this time in their life. Toddlers spend a lot of time modeling teachers’ verbal communications. The teacher will help your child find the correct words when identifying items or when trying to communicate their feelings. They also model each other. Through the use of books, puppets, finger plays, and songs the children will hear and imitate many sounds and words. The teachers encourage the children to use words to communicate their needs and concerns. We also incorporate sign language into your toddler’s language development.

Reading: Books are a huge part of a toddler’s day. Reading stories and activities including flannel boards, finger plays, and puppets help to develop reading. The toddler is starting to learn many concept words. They are also beginning to follow two-step directions.

Math: Matching colors, recognizing colors, and beginning to identify colors are all part of an introduction to math. They will begin to match and recognize shapes, count from 1-10, compare items that are the same and different, and sequence items. Simple puzzles, peg boards, patterns, sorting toys, and blocks will all be introduced to help reinforce these early math concepts.

Social Development: The young toddler is becoming a very social being. Recognizing friends, giving hugs, smiling, and laughing are all strong indicators of this fact. They enjoy playing alongside other children in a variety of settings. They are beginning to learn how to play beside others while respecting their materials. We provide more than one of many toys and materials so toddlers can play next to and with other toddlers without always having to share or take turns. Transportation toys, dress-up clothes, and other dramatic play are all popular choices of toddlers. They are beginning to learn the need for manners such as sitting at the table, using a spoon, and keeping food on their plate. Encouraging the children to use their words to express feelings, the teachers will also assist in helping the children find the right words to use. Toddlers are starting to learn about outcomes of behavior choices they make. Toilet training and the skills required to do this independently are also introduced.

Emotional Development: While toddlers are starting to become a little more independent, they are still very dependent on adults. They need a continuity of relationships with loving adults who can appreciate their need for small doses of independence, and are there with open arms when they need a hug. They will come to value themselves if they have been valued. Toddlers are beginning to express emotions in words with a lot of coaching from the teachers. They begin to practice self-help skills. They want to do everything themselves. They will mimic behaviors seen and learned through observations. Teachers are there to be good role models and to provide loving support when toddlers are trying new things.

Small Muscle Development: Building blocks, sorting beads, coloring with large crayons, painting, play dough,  and simple art projects are a few examples of activities to strengthen small muscle development. Pouring and sifting through sand and water play using spoons, cups, and measuring cups are also enjoyed.  The toddler continues efforts to eat with a spoon and drink from an open cup.

Large Muscle Development: Walking is becoming steadier. Running is developing. Large muscle activities include riding toys, climbing, throwing balls, kicking balls, climbing steps, and tumbling, to name a few. Toddlers are perpetually in motion. The large muscle room and the playground provide a safe space for toddlers to practice these emerging skills.

Enrichment Programs: Fee-based lessons including music and gymnastics are available to toddlers.

Star of the Week: Your toddler will have a turn to become the classroom’s star of the week, encouraging positive self-esteem.  He/she will be encouraged to bring in items from home to share and introduce to the classroom.  This is a great way to give your son/daughter lots of positive praise.
